Macy’s

Broadway @ 34th Street

Macy’s isn’t just a department store, it is the department store—the largest in the world, and an inextricable part of New York. It started in 1858 at Sixth Avenue and 14th Street, and moved to its current location on Herald Square (34th Street and Broadway) in 1888. Macy’s created traditions that we take for granted today: in the 1860s they were one of the first stores to set prices a few cents below the whole dollar amount, and in 1874 they were the first to use illuminated window displays to remind people that the Christmas shopping season is near. The classic movie Miracle on 34th Street helped to popularize Macy’s throughout the U.S., and they continue to sponsor their annual Thanksgiving day parade to this day.
