Bloomingdale’s
1000 3rd Avenue @ 59th Street
Lyman and Joseph Bloomingdale founded Bloomingdale’s in 1872 as a large dry goods store, the precursor to the department store. Originally located at 938 3rd Avenue near 56th Street—at the time, the very edge of the city—the store quickly became so popular that it had to expand to a larger venue. The city nicknamed it the “Great East Side Bazaar,” and the store attracted middle–class shoppers from all over with their slogan “the best possible value for the least possible price.” In 1931, the store moved into its current flagship building at 3rd Avenue and 59th Street.
