William A. Shea Stadium

126th Street @ Roosevelt Avenue, Flushing,
Queens

William Shea was an ardent baseball fan and, like so many baseball fans, he was dealt a crushing blow when both New York teams in the National League, the Dodgers and the Giants, left town in 1957. It was in part due to his efforts that the New York Mets came to New York in 1962, and, for his contributions to the sport, Shea Stadium was named in his honor when it was built in 1963.
