The Yankees

The Yankees, known as the Highlanders until 1913, remain dear to the hearts of all New Yorkers. With twenty–six World Series championships under their belt, they are a quintessential part of the city and a continual source of boastful pride. The greatest period for the Yankees was from 1921 to 1964; between these years, they won twenty World Series and twenty–nine league titles, led by some of the greatest players in baseball history: Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Mickey Mantle, and Joe DiMaggio. After a slump in the late 60s, they revived to win the World Series again in 1977 and 1978; after a poor showing in the 80s, they excelled again in the late 90s and won the World Series in 1996, 1998, 1999, and 2000.
