The National Tennis Center
Flushing Meadows–Corona Park, Queens
Every August and September, tennis fans gear up for the U.S. Open at the United States Tennis Center in Queens. Aperitifs are served under shaded tents, wine is chilled, and white polo shirts dot the landscape. The event is one of four Grand Slam tournaments in tennis. The center has seen notable wins by Martina Navratilova, Steffi Graf, Pete Sampras, Andre Agassi, and Althea Gibson. Arthur Ashe became the first African- American man to win a Grand Slam at the U.S. Open in 1968, and the center’s main stadium (the largest tennis stadium in the world) is named in his honor.
