The Mets

Although they are a much younger team than the Yankees, the Mets are also well loved by New Yorkers. They were formed by the National League in 1962, to replace the vacuum left when the Brooklyn Dodgers and New York Giants moved to California in 1957. The Mets played badly in their first few seasons, but went on to win their first World Series in 1969, winning again in 1986. Notable players with the Mets have included Mike Piazza, Darryl Strawberry, and Tom Seaver. In 2000, the Mets played against the Yankees in the first Subway Series since the Yankees beat the Dodgers in 1956. Although the Mets lost, their gallant effort stirred New York baseball fans into a fever pitch.
