8 - G.E. Building

1250 Sixth Avenue @ Rockefeller Center
Architect: Associated Architects
Date Constructed: 1933
8th tallest in NYC (as of 2004)
Height: 850 ft (259 m); 70 floors.

This deep, narrow tower rises in a series of small setbacks between Sixth Avenue on the west and Rockefeller Center’s ice–skating rink on the east, with the famous Rainbow Room on the 65th floor. It is the centerpiece of the Rockefeller Center complex, and was set up as a flagship building for General Electric; the bas–relief sculptures near the entrance glorify the role of electricity in American industry.
