The Condé Nast Building was one of the central projects of the 42nd Street Development Corporation, a public/private partnership that helped rejuvenate the commercial and physical components of Times Square and Midtown Manhattan. The building’s design uses several different architectural schemes; the side facing Broadway is decorated to reflect the billboard energy of the theater district, the side facing 42nd Street is meant to reflect the sober midtown business community, and the bare girders and struts at the top reflect the structure of the building itself.
