5 - Citigroup Center

601 Lexington @ 53rd Street
Architect: Stubbins Associates, Emery Roth & Sons
Date Constructed: 1977
5th tallest in NYC, 44th in the world (as of 2004)
Height: 915 ft (279 m); 59 floors.

Bizarre yet appealing, the tall prism of the Citigroup Center building demonstrates a mature and sensitive approach to modern architecture. Designed in response to new zoning regulations that encouraged the creation of public space, this building has a large plaza area at the street level and on the lower floors, and the vast bulk of the structure is cantilevered out over this plaza. The angled top and smooth white façade is visible almost anywhere in the city.
