14 - Carnegie Hall Tower

152–156 West 57th Street
Architect: Cesar Pelli & Associates
Date Constructed: 1991
14th tallest in NYC (as of 2004)
Height: 757 ft (231 m); 60 floors.

This recent addition to New York’s skyline was carefully built to be in aesthetic harmony with Carnegie Hall, its namesake, which is at the base of the tower. Originally, developers had planned to build one large tower combining the Carnegie Hall site and the Metropolitan Tower site (the Metropolitan Tower is only twenty feet distant). However, the famous Russian Tea Room Restaurant (now closed) was located on the twenty–foot–wide lot between the towers, and when owner Faith Stewart–Gordon refused to let her restaurant be destroyed, the developers were forced to build two narrow towers instead.
