Greenwood Cemetery

Location: Brooklyn

Set on 478 acres that include Brooklyn’s highest point (216 feet above sea level), Greenwood Cemetery is a rolling expanse of trees, hills, grass, ponds, and dignified mausoleums. Although it has been a working cemetery since it was established in 1838, it also functions as a park, a pastoral retreat where death can be contemplated amidst a profusion of life and natural beauty. In the 19th century, the elegant landscaping and beauty of Victorian monuments made it immensely popular, and families from Manhattan often visited for weekend picnics. Famous New Yorkers who have been buried here include inventor Samuel Morse, politicians William “Boss” Tweed and Seth Low, and composer Leonard Bernstein.
