Birdland
Originally located on Broadway @ 52nd Street
One of the best jazz clubs in New York’s rich musical history, Birdland was named after its star performer, saxophonist Charlie “Bird” Parker. The club also featured regular performances by notables such as John Coltrane and his quartet. Birdland was opened in a basement at 1678 Broadway in 1949; it closed in 1965 but has remained in the memories and imaginations of jazz fans everywhere. The name has since been used by other jazz clubs in New York, particularly the music–and–fine–dining Birdland Club at Broadway and 44th Street.
