The world looks to New York for leadership, news, and opinions; maybe that’s because much of the news is made in New York, or because New York has a higher concentration of newsworthy people than any other city. But the world also looks to New York for something even more important: attitude. The best newspapers and magazines offer both—they tell the world what’s going on, and then they tell the world what to think about it. From the New Yorker to the New York Times to hundreds of independent and literary publications, New York’s publications are read throughout the world. As Paul Goldberger observed, “other cities consume culture, New York creates it.”
