Rockefeller Center

There are few images more classically “New York” than ice skaters at Rockefeller Center during the winter. The vast spire of the GE Building proclaims the city’s grandeur to the heavens above and the golden glow of shop windows takes the chill off the hurried streets below. Around Christmas, with the Christmas tree glowing and steel drum players ting–tinging away, Rockefeller Center is particularly magical. John Rockefeller, Jr. built the sunken plaza that holds the ice skating rink, along with most of the surrounding buildings, between 1929 and 1939.
