Ellis Island
The Immigration Center at Ellis Island opened in 1892, and before it closed in 1924, more than 16 million immigrants from all over the world had come through its doors to become American citizens, forming more than two–thirds of all immigrants into the United States. This influx was fundamental in creating the “melting pot” of America and about 40% of Americans living today have at least one ancestor who made the trip through Ellis Island. However, many applicants were turned away, and more than 600 suicides took place at the island when desperate refugees were denied citizenship.
