The Cloisters

Fort Tyron Park, Washington Heights

This remarkable building incorporates the cloisters from five different medieval monasteries, with styles ranging from Gothic to Romanesque. Each section was dismantled stone by stone then shipped to New York and reassembled. The Cloisters holds the Medieval Art collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, most notably the 15th century Unicorn Tapestries, which depict the hunt and capture of the mythical beast. Built atop rocky cliffs that overlook the Hudson River and the New Jersey Palisades, with a medieval herb garden, manicured flowerbeds, and peacocks roaming the grounds, the Cloisters is a richly satisfying aesthetic experience.
