Pierpont Morgan Library
29 East 36th Street @ Madison Avenue
The main building of this opulent museum was originally the private library of financier J.P. Morgan. It’s filled with drawings and prints from European masters, illuminated manuscripts from the Middle Ages and Renaissance, manuscripts and rare books (including three Gutenberg Bibles), musical manuscripts, and paintings. Unique acquisitions, such as the only known fragment of Milton’s original Paradise Lost and the letters of Jane Austen, make this a treasure trove for any literary enthusiast.
