New York Transit Museum
Boerum Place @ Schermerhorn Street, Brooklyn
With one of the best mass transit systems in the world, millions of people use New York City’s subway and bus lines every day. But the process of developing this system was slow, as the city pioneered the use of horse–drawn buses, trolleys, and elevated trains in turn. The New York Transit Museum, located underground in an abandoned station in downtown Brooklyn, details the colorful history of mass transit in New York, with decommissioned subway cars, old turnstiles, photographs, and models. The museum is operated by the Metropolitan Transit Authority (MTA) with the aid of enthusiastic volunteers, and is not to be missed if you’re a New York history buff.
