Museum of Modern Art
11 West 53rd Street
From its first exhibition—a 1929 showing of Cézanne, Gauguin, Seurat, and Van Gogh—the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) has been a tremendously influential institution. Their 1932 exhibition of Bauhaus architecture, under the guidance of Philip Johnson, is generally credited with bringing the International Style of architecture to America. Their permanent collection covers nearly all the big names in modern painting and sculpture, including Monet, Van Gogh, Duchamp, Warhol, Picasso, Rodin, and Pollack. The MoMA was also one of the first museums in the world to embrace the artistic possibilities of cinema, and its two theaters are favorite destinations for New York film buffs.
