Guggenheim Museum
1071 5th Avenue @ 89th Street
The famous spiral building of the Guggenheim Museum was designed by Frank Lloyd Wright and made entirely of hand–sculpted concrete. The main viewing space houses special exhibitions devoted to modern and contemporary art—a visitor might see anything from earthwork installations to a history of motorcycle design. The museum’s permanent collection is oriented around Impressionist, Abstract Expressionist, and Minimalist schools, including works by Marc Chagall, Wassily Kandinsky, Pablo Picasso, Paul Klees, and Robert Mapplethorpe.
