Brooklyn Museum

200 Eastern Parkway @ Prospect Park, Brooklyn

When McKim, Meade, and White designed the building for the Brooklyn Museum in 1893, Brooklyn was still a separate city from New York and the Brooklyn Museum was intended to rival both the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Natural History Museum. This competitive spirit resulted in the building’s regal, imposing edifice on the north edge of Prospect Park. The Brooklyn Museum houses more than 1.5 million pieces, ranging from ancient Egyptian sarcophagi to paintings by modern American masters such as Mark Rothko, Georgia O’Keeffe, and Winslow Homer. The museum also holds some New York oriented pieces in its collection, including architectural fragments from the original Pennsylvania Station.
