Atlas

5th Avenue @ Rockefeller Center
Lee Lawie, 1937

A muscular giant poised in the act of stepping onto his pedestal, Atlas bears the world on his shoulders with stoic determination. Reminiscent of the giants of industry like those who built Rockefeller Center, he aloofly reminds passers–by to step up proudly to their responsibilities. The bronze statue is fifteen feet high and rests on a nine–foot granite pedestal.
