U.S. Courthouse

40 Centre Street
Architect: Cass Gilbert
Date Constructed: 1936

Located next to the Municipal Building, the U.S. Courthouse Building demonstrates architect Cass Gilbert’s unique skill with neoclassical treatments applied to a steel frame skyscraper. Although taller skyscrapers in the financial district sometimes overshadow it, the courthouse is a particularly beautiful building that deserves to have its own spot in the skyline. It has a unique gold–colored pyramidal roof that makes it easy to spot from afar; the walkway of the Brooklyn Bridge offers a particularly good view.
