Tweed Courthouse/Old NY County Courthouse

City Hall Park, Broadway @ Chambers Street
Architect: John Kellum
Date Constructed: 1858

Although this Federal–style building is handsome in its own right, its biggest claim to fame is its price tag. The courthouse cost taxpayers about $13 million, and almost all of that money was channeled into the pockets of corrupt city officials under Boss Tweed. Each window in the three–story building ended up costing $8,000 (an immense sum of money in 1870) and the charge for “printing stationary” came to $186,495 (more than $3 million today).
