The Dakota
Central Park West @ West 72nd Street
Architect: Henry Hardenbergh
Date Constructed: 1882
This is a truly grand old apartment building; when it was built, individual suites had as many as twenty rooms, with ceilings up to fifteen feet high. In 1882, hardly any other buildings had been built as far north as 72nd Street and the story goes that the building got its name when a skeptical commentator said it was so far away from downtown, “it might as well be in the Dakotas.” John Lennon was assassinated in front of this building, and Leonard Bernstein, Boris Karloff, and Judy Garland have all lived here. It has been featured in many books and movies, most notably Rosemary’s Baby and Time and Again by Jack Finney.
