Sony Building

Madison Avenue @ 55th Street
Architect: Philip Johnson
Date Constructed: 1983

Looking like a giant bureau set out among the skyscrapers of New York, this building with its trademark “Chippendale” top and a six–story entrance arch is perhaps Philip Johnson’s most obvious contribution to New York’s architectural legacy. Originally the headquarters for AT&T, it was purchased by Sony in 1992. It is often hidden behind other midtown skyscrapers, but a good view can be obtained from the Queensboro Bridge, where the full extent of its postmodern grandeur can be appreciated.
