Seagram Building

375 Park Avenue Between 52nd and 53rd streets
Architect: Ludwig Mies van der Rohe
Date Constructed: 1958

Designed by Mies van der Rohe, one of the fathers of the International Style, and Philip Johnson, his American disciple, this is one of the great buildings of the 20th century. It was one of the first in New York to use the style of a tall tower combined with a plaza at the base, and it was partially responsible for the 1961 zoning law that encouraged such designs. Johnson designed the restaurant on the ground floor and much of the interior, which showcases his minimalist style.
