Plaza Hotel
5th Avenue @ 59th Street (Grand Army Plaza)
Architect: Henry Hardenbergh
Date Constructed: 1907
The Plaza is more than just a fashionable hotel; it is a 19th–century historical masterpiece that still holds its own even though it is now surrounded by skyscrapers. The buidling has some 800 rooms; it was built in 1907 as a replacement for the original 400 room Plaza which was demolished in 1905. The hotel is located at Grand Army Plaza across from FAO Schwartz, at the southeast corner of Central Park. Horse–drawn carriages (which give tours of the park) still idle outside the Plaza along 59th Street, giving the impression that the hotel just stepped out of the pages of an enchanting fairytale.
