Old St. Patrick’s Cathedral
260 Mulberry Street, Between Prince and Houston streets
Architect: Joseph Mangin
Date Constructed: 1815
Roman Catholic
Built in 1815, this was the original seat of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese in New York City. There was so much anti–Catholic sentiment in the city during the 19th century that high walls were built around the churchyard to protect the building from mobs and arsonists. It became a parish church when the Cathedra, or the Bishop’s seat, was moved uptown to the newer St. Patrick’s on Fifth Avenue in 1879.
