The central institution of Wall Street, the New York Stock Exchange is also the largest securities trading board in the world. The origins of the NYSE can be traced back to 1792, when twenty–two stockbrokers and merchants signed the “Buttonwood Agreement” after meeting under a Buttonwood (or Sycamore) tree. The exchange grew precipitously in the late 19th and early 20th centuries and moved into its current building in 1903. Today, it accounts for nearly half of the world’s capitol; daily trading averages more than 200 million shares and annual trading amounts to more than $10 trillion.
