Lincoln Center

Broadway @ 66th Street
Architect: Various Architects
Date Constructed: 1962–1968

Lincoln Center was built by various architects from 1962 to 1968; the complex includes the Avery Fisher Hall (designed by Max Abramovitz), the New York State Theater (Philip Johnson), the Metropolitan Opera House (Wallace Harrison), the Julliard School of Music (Pietro Bellushci), and the Vivian Beaumont Theater (Eero Saarinen). It was the first time that the different centers for such a wide array of performance arts were brought together in one place, and it instantly became a favorite destination for visitors and New York residents. Some critics have suggested that containing the arts in one place reduces the city’s creative fecundity, but nonetheless the scheme has since been imitated in cities across the country.
