Lever House

390 Park Avenue @ 54th Street
Architect: Gordon Bunschaft of Skidmore, Owings & Merrill
Date Constructed: 1952

Generally considered to be the first major building in the United States designed in the International Style, this building was also one of the first to use a glass curtain wall over its steel frame. Although today it’s just another glass slab of a building on Park Avenue, when it was built its smooth lines and hard angles were almost revolutionary. The green glass walls gave it a high–tech, clean look that was perfect for the corporate headquarters of Lever Brothers, a soap and detergent company.
