Haughwort Building

488 Broadway @ Broome Street
Architect: J. Gaynor
Date Constructed: 1857

The Haughwort building on Broadway is New York’s best example of cast–iron architecture. It has a magnificent façade of rounded arches and Corinthian columns, which was copied directly from the classic Renaissance Biblioteca building on St. Mark’s Square in Venice. The Haughwort building also has a more noteworthy claim to fame: it was the first building in the world to be equipped with a viable safety elevator, designed by Elisha Otis (founder of Otis Elevators).
