Gracie Mansion
East End Avenue and 88th Street
Architect: Ezra Weeks
Date Constructed: 1804
(Addition by Mott Schmidt, 1966)
Gracie Mansion was built in 1804 as a weekend retreat for Archibald Gracie (back then, 88th Street was in the country). It was eventually sold to the Parks Department, and in 1942 it became the official mayoral residence, a title it has retained ever since. Fiorello La Guardia was the first mayor to live in the mansion.
