Cunard Building

25 Broadway
Architect: Benjamin Morris and Carrère & Hastings
Date Constructed: 1921

This was the headquarters of the famous Cunard Line, which established the first trans–Atlantic passenger service in 1847. Before airplanes, this was the only way for passengers to move between the United States and Europe. The magnificent ships on its line, like the Queen Mary, the Queen Elizabeth, and the Mauritania, were palatial steamships known for speed and the luxury of their accoutrements. The main booking hall in this building, where tickets for these ships were purchased, is an exquisitely detailed space with vaulted ceilings; it now contains a branch of the U.S. Postal Service.
