Giuliani, Rudolph
Born 1944
America’s favorite Mayor. A firm and unflinching leader of the city for years, Rudolph Giuliani became known in every household across the nation in the aftermath of September 11, 2001. His most visible accomplishment was to drastically reduce violent crime in the city; he also cleaned up Times Square, lured business headquarters back to the city, and helped restore fiscal equilibrium. Although he made the city a safer place to live, many New Yorkers complained that he was destroying New York’s rough–edged personality; the complaints reached an all–time high during a brief, unbelievable period when police actually began giving tickets for jaywalking.
