George Washington Bridge
Main span: 3,500 ft (1,068 m)
Manhattan to New Jersey
Like the Brooklyn Bridge and Williamsburg Bridge before it, the George Washington Bridge was the longest suspension bridge in the world when it opened in 1931. It was designed by Othmar Ammann and built by the Port Authority, and crosses from 179th Street in Manhattan to New Jersey carrying US Interstate 95. A lower level was added in 1962. The towers stretch up more than 600 feet above the Hudson River, and the bridge itself is 119 feet wide. The George Washington Bridge also displays the largest free–flying American flag in the world, which is hung over the road from the west tower on national holidays.
